First Date — Superbowl Party?

According to It’s Just Lunch‘s Super Bowl survey, 47% of respondents believe a Super Bowl party would make for a good first date. Almost half. I think there’s a lot of angles to look at this from.

Here’s what Maggie had to say:

Aside from one exception which I will get to, I think a superbowl party is a TERRIBLE place for a first date. If someone asked me on a date, to a superbowl party, I would probably never talk to them again. At superbowl party the focus is on the game (or the commercials. .) and not on getting to know someone new. Plus it’s SUPER awkward getting to know someone new and having to meet a million of their friends at the same time. First dates are hard enough without interrogating and overly concerned friends trying to size you up. And I don’t even want to think about a superbowl first date if you weren’t rooting for the same team. Which leads me my one and only exception: If you and your date are both fans of the same team and have an equal appreciation and attention span for the sport. That’s it.

Pretty much what I expected her to say. While I agree that a first date at a Super Bowl party could get messy, I do see the potential for some serious pre-screening. By that I mean, you get to see how your date reacts to the situation; how do they root for their team? Do they care about sports? How do they interact with strangers? What foods/drinks to they like? Are they too embarrassed to pig out in front of you? Are they embarrassed by your crazy team-loving antics? Does she dig Beyonce? etc.

What do you think? Is a Super Bowl party a good environment for a first date?
